Perfect adhesion on waxy powder coatings

The user

is a leader supplier and manufacturer of compressors and compressed air technology with headquarters in Germany and branches throughout the world.

Initial situation

A self-adhesive type plate was needed for the marking of portable compressors used in tunnel construction, demolition work or in sand blasting operations.

The standardised imprint should be implemented in a thermal transfer printing process, the type plate should be tamper proof and adhere permanently to various powder coating substrates. Moreover, the surface of the housing was extremely structured.

The adhesion of self-adhesive materials on powder coatings depends upon the powder coating used as it may contain wax elements that consequently make adhesion quite difficult. Wax particles have a rejecting affect on adhesives and thus reduce the tackiness.

After several months of tests under real application conditions, a material combination was approved that satisfies all requirements.

Solution from ELTEX

The type plate is imprinted in line with the TOP PROTECT 2 in 1 principle in a thermal transfer printing process and the print image protected against the aggressive external influences prevailing in the construction industry by a transparent, laminate foil.

Once the type label has been affixed it can only be removed in small pieces. It cannot therefore be transferred to another appliance. Any warranty fraud can thus be excluded.

The self-adhesive, printable foil was especially developed for this application. It bonds perfectly with various powder-coating qualities, it is flexible and adapts extremely well to the structured surface of the compressor housing.
