Labels with EX-approval and UL-approval rationalise manufacturing
The User
offers its customers all drive and control technologies from a single source. As a subsidiary of a group of companies specialising in technology, the brand is represented throughout the world. Initial situation
Riveted type plates marked with a laser engraving appliance were used
for the majority of servomotors before 2005. Self-adhesive labelling materials, suitable for use in explosion-hazardous areas yet at the same time meeting the requirements for UL-approval for outdoor applications, were unavailable for very structured substrates.
Therefore, the specialists at ELTEX were commissioned with the task of finding a labelling material that would satisfy all the requirements.
Solution from ELTEX
ELTEX developed a polyester foil with a solvent-resistant adhesive which bonds perfectly with very structured substrates on account of the high weight of its adhesive.
The silver, polyester foil is imprinted in a thermal transfer printing process with a print resolution of 600 dpi since a large quantity of data, including barcode, has to be printed on a small surface area with high border contrast.
After inscription, the type plate labels are protected in accordance with the TOP-PROTECT 2 in 1 principle using a solvent- and UV-resistant laminate surface which is then attached to the servomotor by means of the adhesive.
Components and parts which are painted after marking are further provided with a removable, transparent paint protection foil which can simply be removed after the coating process. The barcode can still be perfectly identified and all type plate data is permanently readable.
Besides developing the labelling material, ELTEX provided the additional service of having it thoroughly checked by the Underwriters Laboratories as well as in accordance with Atex 95 for type plates attached to appliances used in explosion-hazardous areas.
After receiving manufacturing approval, self-adhesive type labels are now in use on all production lines
The main benefits:
- Cost savings from the use of self-adhesive type plate labels
- Reduced number of working cycles in the production area
- One type of type plate label for all applications decreases procurement costs and stock-keeping
- High resolution, 600 dpi thermal transfer printing
- Decentralised making of type plates on the individual production lines
- UL- and EX-approval
- Removable, transparent laminate protects type plates during the painting process

Additional advantage
The new UL- and EX-approvals can be used in many other fields of activity. In the meantime these type plate labels are in use for drive systems, with pneumatic as well as with EX-protected components for off-shore equipment, in tunnel construction, building projects, mining, the chemical industry and in port construction.
A version has been available for a short time now with a CUL-approval, an approval suitable for appliances which are destined for export to Canada.
For small purchase quantities, ELTEX offers self-adhesive type plates with EX-approval from its TOP PROTECT OFFICE serials for inscription purposes using office laser printers.
